Cavity Wall Insulation

Insulate your cavity walls and save up to £280 per year

Around a third of all heat in uninsulated homes is lost through external walls. Heat flows from warmer to colder temperatures and in the winter the colder it is, the easier it is for it to escape if you have a cavity wall that has not been insulated.

By insulating your cavity walls, you will save energy and cut costs from your heating bill.

Houses built after the 1920s were generally built with cavity walls, although you will find cavities in some properties from the early 1900s onwards. This means that you have a gap between the outer and inner walls. The outside wall is usually made of brick and the inner wall is either brick or concrete block.

Generally speaking, houses built from the 1990’s onwards have wall insulation within the construction to keep the heat in, but if your house is older than that, it may not have any insulation.

If you are in receipt of a qualifying benefit or qualify under the Local Authority Flex scheme, you could receive free cavity wall insulation.

What type of wall have I got?

If you can see the brickwork on the outside of your house, have a look at the pattern of the bricks. If you only see long bricks in an even pattern, it’s likely you have got cavity walls. If, however, you have an alternating pattern of long and short bricks, it is likely that you have got solid walls.

If the brickwork has been covered up, you can also tell by measuring the thickness of the wall from a window opening. If the brick wall is more than 26cm thick then it probably has a cavity, but, if it’s thinner – usually around 22cm or 9 inches – then it’s probably solid.

Stone walls will usually be thicker, but are usually solid.

If you’ve got solid walls – or one of the other types of walls, such as timber frame – we can still help you with a solid wall insulation grant for internal wall insulation or external wall insulation.

Save energy, save money

With up to 35% of heat lost through an uninsulated cavity wall, insulation is a quick and easy way to save energy and money. According to the Energy Saving Trust, if you have no cavity wall insulation at all, by installing it you could save up to £280 per year.

Remember, if you qualify, PT Energy Solutions could provide you with this insulation for free through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO3) scheme.
